The good thing about being the guy in the basement was that I didn’t have to surface much or explain my crazy hermit tendencies. Another perk was that I could send out a mass text for an emergency meeting, and everyone would obey. No one ignores the mad scientist.

I sent the text out in the morning and set the meeting for eight in the evening. It was a safe bet that Kara would be off work by then, and I was pretty sure that despite all the espionage, the twins had an open schedule. I would have liked for Kara to bring Michael along, but I wasn’t sure if the twins were ready to show him our Fortress of Solitude or, depending on the canon, our Professor Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters.

Neither Maxim nor Kara had been by last night, and my suspicions were confirmed when they both slunk into the basement looking slightly guilty. I sniffed deeply. Kara had been to work since their little rendezvous, and both of them had showered, but I could still smell traces of Maxim on her skin. I suppressed a wicked grin and met Kara’s eyes with a friendly smile instead. I wasn’t jealous at all. In fact, I was rather proud of my girl for getting it in with both of the Siberian studs.

Alexei walked into the basement workroom and looked just as kind and oblivious as usual. I wasn’t certain how my sense of smell stacked up to his, but either his was far inferior, or he was willfully ignoring the scent of his brother’s sex all over his not-girlfriend.

I had pulled a couple of the metal folding chairs over for everyone, but Maxim stood straight up in his pseudo-military pose. I wished that dude would just relax for half a second. Alexei and Kara both grabbed chairs, and I waited until everyone had settled in to begin.

I raked a hand through my raven-dark hair. “Thanks for coming, y’all. I just wanted to fill you in on a few things.”

Alexei leaned forward eagerly. “Did you manage to crack the devices?”

I grimaced. “No, boss, sorry. That’s one of the things I wanted to discuss with y’all. Guy’s phone, his real phone, has got to be the key here. I guarantee the key to that app is on there, as well as master passwords, key codes, and the ability to control the shifter devices. In my experience, Savage might be business-savvy and cunning, but when it comes to common sense, he’s dumber than a sack of hammers, so I can’t imagine him remembering all the security codes without a little help, and I bet that help is on his phone.”

Maxim turned to Kara with a small look of concern. I knew he didn’t want to put her in any kind of dangerous position, but I think he knew he had to ask. “Kara, can you get close enough to Guy to get his phone?”

Kara’s eyes widened. “Steal his phone? No way. Besides, Guy and I aren’t alone in close quarters very often.
